UHF connectors are sometimes also called Ampheno coaxial connectors. They were designed by Ampheno's designers in the 1930s and used as RF connectors in the radio industry. UHF connectors were originally intended to be video connectors for radar equipment, but later were used in various RF applications. The plug can be called a PL259 coaxial connector, while the socket can be called an SO239 connector. These are their original military part numbers.
